What is the Outlook Mobile Service account?
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 ships with an optional account type that can employ a web service to send SMS messages from Outlook to an SMS text-enabled cell phone account. Outlook can’t perform this task itself, but the web service provides the conduit between Outlook and the SMS receiver for a small fee.
Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service
Outlook users have always been plagued with a hot issue: how to maintain access to Outlook data when they're mobile. Finally, a solution has been developed to address that problem, and it’s called Outlook Mobile Service (OMS). It's a free Outlook 2007 add-in that enables users to create both SMS and MMS, and communicate with service providers to move these messages to and from mobile phones and desktops. It also features a new mobile address book. OMS has the ability to forward reminders, calendar summaries, and selected email messages to any mobile that supports text messaging. This eliminates the need for a high-end phone with a high-end price, and a high-speed data connection to get crucial Outlook data while on the move. However, reading emails on the phone is still far from impractical, but that’s a limitation of the SMS format rather than a fault of the add-in itself. OMS can’t give the full experience of Outlook 2007 on a mobile device. But, if one spends a lot of time away from the computer, and wants a simple and inexpensive way to get Outlook notifications and calendar information on your mobile phone, Outlook Mobile Service may be exactly the service you need.
The Outlook Mobile Service account allows users to send SMS messages to mobile phones, but those messages are not limited to original SMS text. You can forward email, tasks, calendar items, and contact information, too. OMS messages can be scheduled as well. A good use of the scheduling feature might be a recurring early morning message with the current day’s calendar.
Within Outlook 2007, messages sent through the OMS account are stored in Outlook like any other message. They will reside in Sent Items. They can be moved to a separate folder, indexed for searchability, and archived, if needed. They have a different icon, a small cell phone and a yellow note, that identifies them as SMS bound messages. |
